New O2 Cocoon to rival Apple iPhone

Due to hit the market in the Autumn, the Cocoon has been designed as an integrated music and phone device aimed at the youth market who want music on the move.

O2 Cocoon’s unusual designThe phone was designed by Swedish firm Syntes Studio, and their design concept below gives you some idea of the inspiration for the unusual shape. The phone itself has a 2 megapixel autofocus camera and a second video calling camera, a QVGA 240X320 display, an MP3 player, an FM radio and expandable memory up to 2GB.The internal layout appears quite simple, but there are also buttons located on the side of the device that work the media devices meaning that the Cocoon can be used as MP3, radio or perhaps an alarm clock even when the phone is shut! |

Sprint announces Muziq from LG
![]() |
Shoring up its music-friendly line alongside the UpStage from Samsung, Sprint has announced its "Muziq," the Fusic's spiritual successor from LG. While it'll face some serious musicphone competition from across the CDMA / GSM divide later this week, the Muziq holds its own with some interesting features including an integrated FM transmitter that can send tuneage to any FM radio within ten feet. It also offers up stereo Bluetooth, a microSD slot supporting up to 4GB of expansion (a 64MB card is included in box), 1.3 megapixel camera, and sideloading of DRM-free music via USB. Look for it to hit on July 15 for $99 on contract. |
T-Mobile goes national with HotSpot @Home WiFi calling

Following a limited launch last year in its hometown of Seattle, T-Mobile's finally pulling all the stops and taking its "HotSpot @Home" hybrid GSM / WiFi calling service national. A first among the US' big four carriers, @Home relies on traditional cell airwaves out in the field but switches seamlessly to WiFi when it gets within range of a T-Mobile hotspot or any other wireless router you've configured your phone to latch onto. For the millions of us with less-than-stellar reception in our homes, the service could be a life-saver -- and even better, WiFi minutes aren't deducted from your plan. Launch handsets are the Nokia 6086 and Samsung t409, both of which will go out the door for $49.99 on contract and include a Linksys or D-Link router -- both specially designed for @Home service -- for free after rebate, though any 802.11b access point should work. The service itself will run $9.99 per month on individual and $19.99 on family plans for up to five handsets. Look for the equipment today in T-Mobile stores and on the carrier's website.
New details about the iPhone

Remember the winning Engadget commercial, "The Long Arm of Steve Jobs"? We posted it after the break, but finding someone who's spent some serious time with a pre-launch iPhone and getting them to talk is basically a lot like that. Still, we managed to smuggle out some freshly leaked details from a very trusted inside source who's been fooling around with a unit. Here's what they had to say:
- The keyboard was simply described as "disappointing". Keyboarding with two thumbs often registers multiple key presses (two or three at a time) resulting in a lot of mistakes. The best way to type is with a single finger (as shown in most of Apple's demos), but two thumbs is supposedly very difficult. After trying it for a number of days our source gave up using their thumbs.
- The text auto-correction only works well for simple words, but doesn't work for proper names. We can only assume this bit will get better with time as Apple fills out its predictive text dictionary.
- "It won't replace a BlackBerry. It's not good for text input. It's just not a business product."
- The touchscreen was said to, in general, require somewhat hard presses to register input, and needs some getting used to.
- In addition to its dock, the iPhone comes packaged with a polishing cloth (the thing's supposedly a fingerprint magnet, no surprise) and the usual smallish power adapter.
- The Bluetooth headset will debut in the $120 range, and will come with its own dock for charging both the phone and the headset. The headset will feature a miniature magnetic charging interface á la MagSafe.
- The Bluetooth headset has a hidden LED and is supposedly a very small and elegant device. Sound quality is said to be "typical". There is no clip; like many headsets you're expected to just let it hang out of your ear, as previously shown.
- The browser "worked well" but page load speeds on EDGE were just as slow as expected. It sounds like 3G users will have a tough run with this.
- Users must scroll through the address book (or use the alphabet-drag on the side) -- one cannot bring up the keyboard and type in a name, as many of us are used to.
- Shocker: YouTube over EDGE didn't work well at all, and will basically necessitate use of WiFi.
IPhone monthly plans start at $59.99
The two companies also said customers will be able to activate their wireless service, including transferring their existing cell numbers to the handset - from home, using Apple Inc.'s iTunes software.
That's a convenience no other cellular carrier offers and something UBS Securities analyst Benjamin Reitzes called a "game changer" for the industry. Making the purchase and activation easy will lower selling costs and potentially further lift sales, Reitzes said Tuesday.
Three monthly plans with a minimum two-year service contract will be available: the $59.99 plan includes 450 minutes of voice time; a $79.99 plan includes 900 minutes; and a $99.99 plan includes 1,350 minutes. All three offer 200 text messages, unlimited data services, minutes that roll over month-to-month and mobile-to-mobile calls. There also is a $36 activation fee.
Customers can pay extra for plans to get more talk time or text messages. Several family-style plans also are available, ranging from $80 a month for 700 shared minutes to $120 for 2,100 shared minutes.
The monthly rates for the iPhone are roughly $10 less than comparable service plans for other smart phones offered through AT&T, AT&T spokesman Michael Coe said.
The monthly fee will be on top of the iPhone's price - $499 for a model with 4 gigabytes of storage and $599 for one with 8 gigabytes. The phone is slated to go on sale at 6 p.m. local time Friday at Apple and AT&T stores as well as Apple's Web site.
Apple claims the iPhone - which combines the functions of a cell phone, iPod media player and Web-surfing device - will be easier to use than other smart phones because of its unique touch-screen display and intuitive software that allows for easy access to voice mail messages, the Internet, and video and music libraries. AT&T is the gadget's exclusive carrier.
Anticipation for the handset has reached - or arguably even surpassed - levels usually reserved for new video game consoles.
Five people were in line by Tuesday afternoon outside Apple's Fifth Avenue store in New York City, three of them having been in line since Monday.
"Words can't express why I want an iPhone," said Jessica Rodriguez, 24, a college student. "The main reason is (Apple CEO) Steve Jobs is a genius. He's a great innovator. It's going to be the next big thing in cell phones."
Sitting in a red folding chair she brought, Rodriguez said she was planning to get a $599 iPhone as a belated birthday gift for her sister. If the store will let her buy two, she said, she'll get one for herself.
Apple isn't saying how many total iPhones it will have at launch and hasn't disclosed whether there will be any per-person purchase limits.
Coe said purchases at AT&T stores will be limited to one per customer.
Meanwhile, some people who are unable to queue up themselves have posted help-wanted pleas on community Web sites like Craigslist, offering to pay someone to stand in line for them.
The iPhone's price - which doesn't include any kind of carrier subsidy commonly offered for other cell phones - lands on the high-end of the smart phone market, but analysts say the service plans are very competitive.
Sprint Nextel Corp., for instance, also charges $59.99 a month for 450 minutes of talk time, $79.99 for 900 minutes and $99.99 for 1,350 minutes along with unlimited data service. Its plans allow, however, up to 300 text messages and starts its unlimited evening calls at 7 p.m. instead of AT&T's 9 p.m. start time.
Verizon Wireless plans to launch new "premium" plans in July, starting at $79.99 for 450 minutes with unlimited calls on a Verizon network, unlimited nights and weekends, and unlimited messaging and data services, company spokeswoman Brenda Raney said. The most expensive plan will be $239.99 for 6,000 minutes of talk time, she said.
Skeptics question whether the iPhone can live up to its lofty expectations. Scrutiny of the product is so great that any small disappointment could send Apple's stock plunging, analysts say.
Apple shares dropped $2.69, or 2.2 percent, to $119.65 on Tuesday. Shares of AT&T fell 7 cents to close at $24.61.
Andy Hargreaves, a Pacific Crest Securities analyst, said Apple shareholders have run the stock up in anticipation of the iPhone's release, and they don't feel it will go much higher after the product is available, he said.
"I think expectations are very, very high and some people are taking some money off the table ahead of the launch," WR Hambrecht analyst Matthew Kather said.

Sony Ericsson’s new Z310 is a mirror-finish clamshell phone
For a phone that reflects your style whether you’re at work or at play, picture yourself with the new Sony Ericsson Z310. Announced today, this stand-out phone has a flawless, polished finish. The front icon display is integrated into the design, hidden discretely beneath the surface until a message or call is received. There are even eye-catching coloured light effects that can be assigned to contacts in the phonebook; so you can know at a glance who is calling.
The seamless, semi-transparent finish on the front of the phone allows the display icons (which signal when a new event takes place on the phone) to be ‘hidden’ beneath the surface. And a separate external display, also concealed under the surface of the phone, lets you know exactly who is calling.
Adding to the striking design is a series of novel light effects that serve to both personalise the phone & allow the user to ‘colour code’ their contacts. Simply assign a coloured light to your frequent callers and you will know instantly whether its work trying to reach you, your best friend fixing a date, or your mother calling to invite you to Sunday lunch! It is even possible to set the look and feel of the menu & screen display to match the time of day; a bright theme during the daytime and something more relaxing or subtle at night.
Although straightforward to use, the Z310 is loaded with features to help you organise your life and have fun along the way. The built-in VGA camera allows you to take spontaneous snaps and share them with family and friends instantly via Picture Blogging (uploading pictures directly to a Blog site from the Z310) or Picture Messaging (MMS). Alternatively, just use the phone as a portable photo album to make sure that your memories are always with you.
And there’s no need to worry if you can’t find your phone in your bag or under that pile of papers! Just link the Z310 to a Bluetooth headset, such as the comfortable & compact HBH-PV705 Headset, and you are likely to never miss a call. You can choose the Z310 in the colour that best fits your lifestyle and your wardrobe. This luscious phone comes in three very individual colours: Jet Set Black, Blush Bronze or Lush Pink.
Z310 is a Triple band/EDGE/GPRS 900/1800/1900 handset and will be available in selected markets from Q1 2007.
For more information on the new Z310i check out the phone page of the new device.

During the Milionairsfair in Amsterdam there was the ability to check out the latest mobile phone models from the Swiss company GoldVish, a brand that will stay unreachable for a lot of people when they are searching for a new mobile phone. The Swiss company was granted a place in the Guinness Book of Records with the sales of the most expensive mobile phone in the world. The happy owner of the device is a Russian oil magnate. He bought the mobile phone for his girlfriend at a price of 1.000.000 Euros.
NewMobile also got the opportunity to check out one of the two remaining models during the Milionairsfair in Amsterdam. The device is quiet heavy due to the available diamantes and has a special shape and a special part that can be removed. The space that can be removed is used as a compartment for small jewellery. The backside of the device has been set with crocodile leather and each corner and the central joystick has a diamante of 1 ct.

The most "normal" model of the two is the GoldVish Illusion series. The phone has been made of 18 ct. gold with the choice of white, yellow or pink gold and is set with diamantes. The size of the Illusion is 110 x 46 x 17 mm and the device has a weight of 198 grams. The back of the device is set with crocodile leather in several colours.

The specifications of this special device consist of GPRS, EDGE, Quad-band, Bluetooth, 2.0 Mpixel camera, FM-radio, MP3 player, stereo speakers, 2 GB SD memory card, Email, SMS, EMS, MMS, handsfree function, 262.000 colour TFT display with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels and voice memo. Enjoy the ultimate wireless audio quality; the Sony Ericsson HBH-DS970
Sony Ericsson has shown a large amount of Walkman products during the past year. Next to this set of mobile phones several accessories have been introduced. For example special music desk stands with build-in speakers, but also several headsets. One of these headsets is the new HBH-DS970; a wireless stereo Bluetooth headset. The headset has not the same set-up as the BT620s from Jabra, but consists of two separate earplugs which will be placed in the ear. Both are connected via a wire that can be placed around the neck of the user and a remote control with build-in display. The DS970 is the latest wireless stereo Bluetooth headset from Sony Ericsson and is being delivered next to several other Walkman models as the W810i, W850i and W950i.

Both earplugs make use of the In-ear concept. It enhances the bass sound quality, however not every user will be that satisfied wearing the In-ear headset. People should make a distinctive choice for this concept. The headset fits better than the standard version delivered with all Walkman phones.

The Sony Ericsson HBH-DS970 is a Bluetooth stereo headset, which supports the profiles Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) and Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP). Both profiles are essential while listening music and controlling the music player using a wireless connection. Via our search function you can enter the Bluetooth A2DP profile which sets up the wireless connection and generate a list of mobile phones which support this feature. Tip: Use the Advanced specifications and details setting!
The profile AVRCP makes it possible to change the setting start, pause, forward and previous inside the music player via the headset and the wireless connection. What does it mean? People do need to use wired headsets that lie around and mess up your desk or pocket. But you can wear a trendy headset which gives you hifi stereo audio such as the Sony Ericsson HBH-DS970!

The audio quality of the Sony Ericsson HBH-DS970 is quite good, but really depends on the device you connect the headset to and the available options that enhance the sound quality. When you use the headset with for instance Sony Ericsson products you will notice that the quality is superb. People get the feeling they use a wired headset in stead of a wireless version. It is a true art! The quality is unsurpassed.
Also the use of an equalizer during operation is possible. The headset addresses the changes made in the player and changes the sound quality. On the remote control the user can rewind or forward to a different song, adjust the volume, pause the music player or block the controls. By using the build-in display it is possible to check the number playing and the height of the volume.
Watch the video of the Sony Ericsson HBH-DS970 and check how the headset will be controlled!
Phone conversations can also be taken care off with this headset. It works as it should be. In the beginning it is quite difficult to find the phone control key because it is between the left ear and left shoulder. You would expect it to be on remote control and not between your ear and shoulder. But after you found the key there is no problem in using it.

The weight of the headset lies around the 27 grams and that is reasonably light for a Bluetooth headset. The headset has a maximum of 300 hours standby time and a call time of 6 hours. No bad values for this music headset. Charging is conducted via the standard charger which is delivered with several other accessories and which you can use to charge any Sony Ericsson device.

Sony Ericsson K530 – slim and 3G

The handset sports very pocketable dimensions at 102x46x14 mm, and isn't a heavyweight either, tipping the scales at 92 grams. 16 Mb of built-in memory can be augmented with Memory Stick Micro M2 card. But what's really impressive for a mid-range offering is that the K530 comes with a 2-inch QVGA display capable of 262K colors. The K530 operates in GSM 900/1800/1900 and UMTS 2100. The maker quotes the battery life at 9 hours of talk time in GSM and 3 hours within UMTS networks; for standby the numbers are even at 395 hours each.

The main camera takes shots in 2 Mpix resolution and can use its digital zoom to get you 2,5x times closer to any object. On top of that, there is a forward-facing camera for video calls, and like we said above, this is one has a whole pack of technological talents under the hood – Bluetooth A2DP, PlayNow, TrackID, 3D-games, browser and RSS-reader. And naturally, we are happy to see radio in the K530.

Sony Ericsson K850 with 5.0 Megapixel Camera

The Sony Ericsson K850 Cyber-shot is the next generation of powerful cameraphones by Sony Ericsson which have long kept the first place when it comes to camera-in-phone performance. Today they are making the next step and move on to using a 5 megapixel camera.
Beside that, the Sony Ericsson K850 comes with a number of updates over previously released handsets: it has an automatic camera cover, a renovated camera interface, and a spanking new media browser with picture auto rotate feature. It has a larger, 2.2" TFT display, and features extended network support such as tri-band HSDPA and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE. That sort of a solution is uncommon for Sony Ericsson since up until now they offered identical EDGE-enabled and UMTS-enabled devices separately. Now for the first time we see 3G plus EDGE all-in-one.
Other than that, the handset retains all the original K810 specs such as a secondary video calls camera, stereo Bluetooth, USB support, FM radio and a M2 memory card slot (with a 512MB card to be included in the retail package). The memory card slot deserves a special attention since this is the first SE attempt in using a dual card support - it can host both a M2 card as well as a microSD card. In terms of its size, the new K850 will be identical with the Sony Ericsson K810 keeping the same measurements and adding only 3g of additional weight. Sony Ericsson K850 carries a really innovative design solution - the navigation D-pad (marked by the green rectangle on the photo) is made part of the alphanumeric keypad, while the softkeys are really small. The most probable reason for such a solution is obvious the need to fit a larger display while keeping the older size and form factor.
The Sony Ericsson K850 will be available in Velvet Blue or Luminous Green in the beginning of Q4 2007.
Sony Ericsson unveils W910 and W960

The most exciting of the pack are definitely the new Walkman phones which as usual attract great attention among music lovers. The Sony Ericsson W910 is a HSDPA-enabled slider and comes with the version 3.0 of the Walkman player which means that Sony Ericsson have prepared a number of new treats to the users. The new feature Shake control will allow W910 users to skip tracks backwards and forward with a mere shake of their handset. A double shake back and forth shuffles the current playlist. The Shake control will add new dimensions to mobile gaming too. The Shake control will also be available on the Sony Ericsson W580 slider announced in March 2007.
The Sony Ericsson W910 comes also with the PC synchronization software called Sony Ericsson Media Manager. The first phones to use the new Media Manager will be Sony Ericsson W910, Sony Ericsson W960 and Sony Ericsson K850. Those three handsets are also equipped with a brand new media browser which replaces the well-known Sony Ericsson file manager. The Media Manager software allows for the next interesting feature expected in the Sony Ericsson W910 called SenseMe. The software automatically designates a mood to every track transferred to your handset based on tempo and style. Afterwards you can easily create your current playlist according to the mood you are in. SenseMe has an innovative visual interface representing tracks as dots in a matrix and positioning them according to the mood they've been designated. Up until now the only place we've seen mood filtering is the Sony Ericsson W950 smartphone, but now this feature is taken on a next level.
The Sony Ericsson W910 also comes with an updated version of the TrackID free service which not only gives you name and artist for a captured audio clip but can now also give you additional info on the artist and album. You can now make dedicated searches on an artist's name without even supplying the TrackID with a recorded sound.
Besides all that, the Sony Ericsson W910 boasts a 2 megapixel camera plus a secondary one for video calls and a really large 2.4" 262K color TFT display with a QVGA resolution. The W910 has stereo Bluetooth and FM radio and full UMTS/HSDPA 2100 MHz and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE network support.
The Sony Ericsson W910 will be available in Hearty Red or Noble Black from Q4 2007.
The Sony Ericsson W960 is the next Walkman in line but this time it's powered by the Symbian OS with the UIQ user interface - much like the W950 Walkman phone and all other Sony Ericsson smartphones. When it comes to size the new W960 is only by few millimeters larger than the original W950 while offering a number of hardware enhancements such as an integrated camera, double the internal memory and 3G support with video calls.

The 2.6" touchscreen 262K color TFT display with QVGA resolution plus the regular alphanumeric keypad and a Jog Dial allows for navigation that is flexible enough. The Sony Ericsson W960 boasts a 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera much like the Sony Ericsson P1 smartphone but packs in 8GB of memory to store all your media files. There is no memory card slot but that would hardly make any difference with all that available space. The handset has UMTS 2100MHz and tri-band GSM/GPRS network support - no EDGE support is present. The Chinese version of the handset will have EDGE but no 3G. Other features of the W960 that are worth mentioning include Wi-Fi, stereo Bluetooth, FM radio and USB support.
When it comes to music capabilities the Sony Ericsson W960 has a new Walkman music player which can be operated with fingers easier than ever. The player also supports the SenseMe technology for filtering tracks by their designated mood. In order to enhance the music listening experience Sony Ericsson have decided to include the new stereo Bluetooth headset HBH-DS220 in the retail package.
The Sony Ericsson W960 will be available in Vinyl Black from Q4 2007.
