Nokia patents eyes-free touchscreen controls

by shadowfax (10/09/2007 - 19:44)

Nokia has patented an interesting way to use a touchscreen on a mobile device without looking at it. It deals with a lid to be placed above the touchscreen. There is a slot in it, certain spots of which can be felt by the finger giving the user eyes-free control of the interface. According to Nokia the device should support the special UI to recognize the control. Notice that the lid is a rotating one, which reveals the traditional touchscreen display.

Taking into account the plenty of touch-control devices (Apple iPhone, LG Prada, LG Viewty, HTC Touch/Slide, Samsung F700 and so on) Nokia’s idea might come in handy. By the way it might be good with portable players and other touch-sensitive devices. The pictures to the patent show the better way to apply it.

Nokia N94i running Windows Mobile a Chinese fake?

by shadowfax (09/19/2007 - 23:32)

The Engadget.com has recently posted pictures of an upcoming Nokia N94i, which is peculiar for running the Microsoft Windows Mobile OS, not Symbian. On the photos we see “winxp.jpg” indicator.

Now it became obvious that the pics dealt with a Chinese knockoff, which in fact was made by Chinese themselves. The source corrected the news. Nokia has barely planned a smartphone with such index (“4” is rarely used by the company because of “Eastern superstitions”). As a matter of fact the penetration of Microsoft info the Nokia world has seen just few examples: Windows Live services integrated in Intellisync and a couple of car navigators.

Sony Ericsson files for touch sensitive keypad patent

by shadowfax (09/19/2007 - 23:14)

Sony Ericsson is the last one from the “great five” to pay attention to touch interface in mobile phones. The company filed for a patent, which deals with a touchscreen displaying virtual buttons in compact devices.

There are no patent details, which make it original, especially taking into account existing models with the implemented idea. Probably Sony Ericsson will be able to derive benefit from similar products by other companies.

The source doesn’t say whether Sony Ericsson would develop products based on its recent concept, however that’s possible

Unlocking iPhone from AT&T gets easier, still a pain

by shadowfax (08/18/2007 - 01:43)

So you say writing SIMs all by your lonesome isn't part of your daily routine, but you're still interested in freeing the iPhone from AT&T's surly bonds? Yeah, we can't blame you -- we're pretty much in the same boat -- so we're glad to see that an ever-so-slightly easier unlocking trick has bubbled out of the hive mind just a week after the original. This new hackery involves a specialized SIM card called a "Turbo SIM" manufactured by the Czech Republic's BLADOX. The idea behind the Turbo SIM is that you can add... well, stuff to the Turbo SIM, sandwich it between your regular SIM and your phone, and the loaded material then becomes available to the handset; traditionally, that "stuff" is value-add software like customized SMS directories, security, logging, and the like. In this case, though, the chip is used to pass through the original AT&T SIM's identifying information to the phone while preserving the calling capability of the Carrier X SIM of your choosing. Of course, a €59 (about $81) Turbo SIM has to be ordered from afar to get this accomplished, the phone has to be jailbreaked, and a handful of files need to be downloaded, edited, and executed, so this still isn't for the faint of heart. As always, buyer beware, and find a nice stack of paper that needs weightin' in case everything goes south in a hurry.

Sony Ericsson K810i bestseller

by shadowfax (08/17/2007 - 01:22)

Sony Ericsson K810i-stylish variation on last year's bestseller, Sony Ericsson K800i. Changes from the original small. Most notable are diminished thickness and the stronger door cameras. Of obvious minuses noted the lack of support EDGE and the average video-recording of the same ills suffered and K800i. Advantages of an updated model, however, inherited a much more - is a different camera, and excellent time work offline, and more.

Remember that devices based on different hardware platforms, while nominally extremely close. K790i noteworthy that support EDGE, and the K800i focus on the use of third-generation networks. It is easy to guess index, the new K810i is still K800i, but supports 3G, which is not too important for the Russian market.
The most important innovation, which immediately striking is the new keyboard design. Keys original forms are grooved surface (something to recalls phone Mobiado, looks interesting). Unfortunately, as is often the case, stylish form requires compromise-in buttons for K810i less convenient than a K800i. This concerns and the lights-it only pieces keys, which is less comfortable. Changed to block navigation, even though there had been an evolutionary process, no losses. Now elements better segmented, which makes us they seemed more comfortable. This is not true of the joystick, which has been drowned too deep (even below the shell). However, the manufacturer promises to the entry of the final version completely correct all the deficiencies test sample and bring ergonomics K810i, as a minimum, to the K800i.

Another important difference in the appearance of fully-glossy front panel. Moment controversial, as now looks extremely phone brand, it has to be mopping, including keyboard area. This is very impractical and deeply disappointing, given the lack of Sony Ericsson plans to set K810i protective films (such as that provided by LG). The opening performance on screen was smaller and had lost protective grilles, which is not very pleasant. But nearby navigation keys have been increased and the symbol of its functionality, on the other hand, are encouraged.

Buy Sony Ericsson K810i is a matter of taste, since most of the changes in comparison with the K800i affects design. From our point of view would be interesting update K790i is still no EDGE embarrassing. There are also record video with a resolution of only 176 1800 (even Nokia 6233 camera at 2 Mpix QVGA- recorded video). Just need to be borne in mind that this time the manufacturer has chosen to modify the form, rather than content. The office serves as an alternative K800i, but not as a new product. Such an extension line for Sony Ericsson is not new. For example, the same course we have seen in recent W610i and W660i. The policy is effective is that the address and K810i. K800i change it is not quite accurate, innovation minimal. But when choosing a new vehicle is to look K810i, especially if you are attracted to design this system.

Of note competitors Nokia N73, partly Samsung U600. At Nokia side to the software is a full-fledged smartphone. Kozyr Samsung-subtle corps. Yes, and the price of both models below ... But apart from the merits of the original K810i K800i offers plus appearance, as the Finnish and Korean opponents watched paler.

O2 Cocoon - unboxing

by shadowfax (08/05/2007 - 22:51)

Today we received the brand new designer phone O2 Cocoon in the mail. I have just unboxed it and of course we’re sharing the holy unboxing ceremony with you guys. Come inside for lots of unboxing photos of this cool phone.

When you just look at the box you instantly get the feeling that O2 has spent lots and lots of hours thinking through and designing all the details regarding the Cocoon and it’s packaging.

When you open up the package, you instantly see the ‘Cocoon‘ hanging down from a branch ready to hatch.

The accessories and manuals are hidden inside a box that slides out of the package from the side.

You get everything with the phone, even a dock and an earphone connector that will let give you an extra 3.5mm connection. Everything goes in white and black. Nice.

Loading up the phone with the SIM card and battery is really easy and…

When you turn on the phone you’ll get a short video intro (with sound). The display is really crisp.
And here’s the coolest thing with the phone. The LED display that is hidden under the shell making it a display. You’ll get a hello message when you turn it on, and when you get incoming calls or SMS they all show up on the shell. Nice!
This is how the top of the phone looks like. The black ring is actually a control that is used to control things like the volume while playing music.

Side shot. Right by thumb you can see the place where you plug in the head set. You can also see the microSD card dock.
No lens cover for the 2 megapixel camera, so you got to be careful.
When you dock the phone, you can choose to make it show the clock all the time. Neat.

Casio Adds A 5.1 MP Cameraphone To Its Exilim Line

by shadowfax (08/04/2007 - 23:06)

While Casio's Exilim line has become synonymous for quality cameras, they took a different route this time and hit us with the W53CA Cameraphone. The device features a 5.1 Megapixel camera with 9 point auto focus, image stabilization and a clamshell swivel screen. To top it off, Casio added MicroSD, MP3 support, and one hell of a sleek design. Unfortunately, it's a Korea exclusive. Sigh.

Google Phone Prototypes, Software, Project Costing Hundreds of Millions of Dollars

by seaghost (08/04/2007 - 22:59)

Valleywag realizes that Google will not likely do phone hardware themselves. Whatever. As long as it supports the software, hopefully some shiny Mobile Google OS, we're interested. Either way, this is what the WSJ and Reuters said today:
•"Now it is drafting specifications for phones that can display all of Google's mobile applications at their best, and it is developing new software to run on them. The company is conducting much of the development work at a facility in Boston, and is working on a sophisticated new Web browser for cellphones."
•Google has invested hundreds of millions on the project.
•Google has also developed prototype phones, with partners like LG Electronics.

• "ads in the mobile phone is that they are twice as profitable or more than the nonmobile phone ads because they're more personal" says Eric Schmidt (from AllthingsD)
•In Europe, T-Mobile and Orange are believed to be partners. Verizon rejected their plans in the US because they wanted to share ad revenue.
•Taiwan's High Tech Computer Corp to design a Linux software-based phone for launch in the first quarter of 2008

Regardless of the reputations of both the WSJ and Reuters, take all of this with a grain of salt.

First Mac Chick of the Month to Use iPhone Is a Good Girl, Really

Lauren Reeves is a former Alaskan ABC news reporter. Apparently she came to New York to find fortune as an actress, comedian and model and has fun posing on top of NYC's roofs. These are the times I wish I was Spider-Man for more than kicking Dr. Octopus's ass.

Indeed Lauren, indeed. And we are sure the aforementioned Apple products couldn't go a day without being used, fondled and hopefully lasciviously licked by you.

Toshiba fanfun 815T with Unlimited Skinning Fun

by seaghost (08/04/2007 - 21:06)

If you’re looking for a cell phone that is a bit more personalized this Toshiba fanfun 815T from the firm Softbank in Japan is just the phone. Especially for us girls, thre are a couple I could see some guys dealing with but frankly for the most part the styles are quite feminine.

I wrote a review on the Pantech C3b a couple of months ago and was ecstatic to have three different covers to choose between. I couldn’t imagine have as many as this Toshiba offers. It has 12 case colors, 300 panel colors and 30 illumination schemes, meaning it has 240 million possible configurations. Now those are options. The body color comes in white, off white, grey, silver, baby pink, pearl pink, rose, champagne gold, brown, blue, and black.

It features HSDPA and FeliCa. It also has a 2.4 inch clear screen liquid crstal, face recognition and IC card lock security functions. The phone will be coming out August 8th.

Bluetooth 2.1+EDR specification approved

by shadowfax (08/04/2007 - 19:03)

Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has approved the specification of Bluetooth 2.1+EDR. The new version brings about some improvements. First of all, the company has simplified recognition and connection process with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. Thus the connection gets set up through fewer steps, at the same time it is secure.

The devices on the new Bluetooth specification consume less power and last 5 times as longer (maximum) – they are for example, mice, keyboards, various sensors and medical equipment. We expect early Bluetooth 2.1+EDR solutions by Broadcom, CSR, Infineon and Texas Instruments to appear later this year.
